1. Header search
- Tap the search icon in the header (desktop) or in the mobile menu to open the search box.
- Start typing — results appear as you type after 2+ characters, so you rarely need to press Enter.
- The quick-results dropdown shows the most relevant matches; tap one to open it.
The same behaviour powers the compact search on video pages (desktop shows the box, mobile shows the icon that expands a dropdown).
💡 Search is a flagship feature — instant-as-you-type suggestions plus typo-tolerant Gujarati matching means readers find what they are looking for on the first try, which is the single biggest trust signal a news portal can give.
2. The typo-proof Gujarati engine
This is the part that makes the search worth showing off:
- Missing matras — ક્રિકેટ typed as કરકટ still finds cricket news (vowels are inferred).
- Missing halants / conjuncts — partial spellings still resolve to the right word.
- Phonetic spellings — a different-but-similar spelling still matches (transliteration support).
- English letters typed by mistake — typing
cricketwhile searching in Gujarati mode finds the same stories. - Stopword removal & ranked relevance — filler words are ignored and results are ranked, not just filtered.
- City-aware ranking — where the site enables it, results can be tuned by the reader's city context.
Combined with instant-as-you-type suggestions, it means readers find what they're looking for on the first try — the single biggest trust signal a news portal can give.
💡 The engine was built specifically for how Gujarati readers type, so it feels magical precisely where other portals fail. Missing a matra or a halant is not a search problem any more.
3. The full search page
Open the full Search page for complete results:
- Type your query in the page's search box.
- Results are grouped by content type — articles, videos, charchapatra and so on.
- Click any result to open it directly.
- The top of the page also carries the same Tags and Flags quick-link rows as the homepage, so you can jump to a topic without retyping your query.
Use the full page when the header dropdown does not have what you want — it gives the complete ranked list rather than just the top few.
4. Bilingual search
Search works in every site language and matches content in that language, but it also handles the way bilingual readers type:
- A Gujarati query can expand to matching English content and vice-versa, so mixed input still resolves.
- If you can't spell a Gujarati word exactly, try the English equivalent — the engine may find the same story.
💡 If search keeps missing a topic, the fix is usually editorial — better titles, summaries and tags — not a search-engine tune-up.
5. When search is not the best tool — ask the assistant
Some questions are easier to ask than to search for. When typing keywords is not getting you there:
- Tap the AI chat button at the bottom-right of any page.
- Ask in plain language — “આજના મુખ્ય સમાચાર શું છે?” or “What happened in Surat last week?”
- The assistant answers in the site's language and cites the actual articles — one tap takes you to the source.
Search and the assistant share the same content; use whichever fits the moment. For the full assistant guide, see Chat & Search — User Guide.
6. Tips
- Short keywords work better than long phrases.
- Try the exact headline words for a news article.
- Search is available in every site language and matches content in that language.
- Can't phrase it as keywords? Ask the AI assistant instead — it searches the same content and can describe what you're looking for in words.
- The tag and flag rows above the results are curated by the newsroom, so a topic that is missing from them can still be found by typing it in the search box.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No results for a common topic | Titles/summaries don't contain the terms readers use | The site team adds the reader's vocabulary to titles, summaries and tags; try a shorter or different keyword in the meantime |
| Search returns the wrong article first | Ranking tuned to a term that appears in the wrong story | The site team improves titles/summaries so the right story matches the query best |
| Gujarati query still failing on matras | Edge-case spelling not covered by the skeleton/fuzzy expansion | Try the English equivalent or a shorter keyword; report the spelling to the site team so the engine can tune |
| English query in Gujarati mode returns nothing | No bilingual expansion path for that term | Try the Gujarati equivalent or ask the assistant; the site team adds parallel terms where appropriate |
| Search box won't open | The search UI's client script did not initialise | Refresh the page; check the browser console for JS errors if it persists |
| Very recent article not showing | Two ordinary reasons: the story was published seconds ago, or the identical phrase was searched in the last half minute by another reader | Wait half a minute and search again. The suggestions list is held for up to 30 seconds so that one popular phrase does not repeat the same scan for every reader; opening the full results page runs its own query. The engine also needs at least 2 characters |
| A result shows a placeholder picture instead of a photo | That story has no picture attached | Nothing to fix on your side — the result still opens normally. See section 7 of the News listing guide for what the placeholder means |
